LaEdittm is a Windows 95/98/NT/2000 HTML editor for you to use with HTMLementarytm while you learn HTML. (Of course, you can use it to edit any other text files, too.) See below for some background information.
LaEdittm makes it easy to enter and learn HTML tags. Notice in Figure 1 that the menu bar groups tags by what they do. Choosing a menu item inserts the tag into your file.
New in LaEdittm 1.05 are the HTML 4 Listboxes. These boxes contain the tags, attributes and values specified by the HTML 4.01 standard. Clicking a tag in the top listbox causes a list of allowed attributes to be displayed in the second listbox. Clicking one of these attributes causes a list of allowed values to be displayed in the bottom listbox. Using the HTML 4 Listboxes lets you write Web pages that are fully compliant with HTML 4.01 without having to look anything up. LaEdit does the lookup for you, automatically. You will learn HTML 4 while writing Web pages! Double clicking on any item inserts it into your Web page.
Also new in LaEdittm 1.05 are the List Maker and Table Maker dialog boxes.

Other features of LaEdittm are the Quick Pick dialogs. They list tags, attributes, values and special items such as entities and colors in tabbed dialogs that can be left open while you work. Just scroll to an item, click it and LaEdittm inserts it into your document. Figure 2 shows the Quick Pick List, which contains commonly used items.

The HTML 4 Listboxes have all the tags, attributes and values that are part of HTML 4.01. Use them to construct Web pages that are fully compliant with HTML 4.01.
The Table Maker Dialog helps you set up a table quickly. You enter the number of rows and columns, and pick commonly used attributes. Then you fill in the table.
The List Maker Dialog help you set up lists quickly. You select the kind of list you want and LaEdit displays the allowed common attributes.
Using the Quick Pick List makes it easy to insert
a tag with an attribute and value.
As an example, consider creating a heading.
From the Tags tab of the Quick Pick List click
on <H1></H1>
and type in the heading text.
Next, position the cursor in the starting tag
(<H1|>)
, click
the Attributes tab and click ALIGN
.
Then click center
from the Values tab.
The insertion point is positioned correctly
to for clicking the next item.
Special characters like <, >, &, entities
and standard colors are listed under the
Specials tag.
The Big Pick List is similar to the Quick Pick List. It lists all HTML 4.01 tags, attributes and values, and some nonstandard tags that are popular with Navigator, Internet Explorer and WebTV.
LaEdit'stm image picker lets you insert an image by selecting its file name from a list. Click Images>Pick Image..., navigate to an image and double click it. LaEdittm calculates the path, width and height, and inserts them into an image tag for you automatically.
LaEdittm has a standard color picker that lets you pick a color visually and insert the corresponding hex triple into your document.
LaEdittm automates frequently done tasks. For example, you can add the tags for regular or frameset Web pages to the current file with a single click.

Background
LaEdittm is designed for people who want to learn HTML and Web page development. It is not offered as a production tool, although it could be used as one. I wrote it because I could not find an editor that suited the needs of my students. LaEdittm does. I wanted an editor that stressed HTML tags. I also wanted the tags to appear in menus and dialogs as close to complete as possible. To that end I include <, >, and opening and closing tags; occasionally I'll use ellipses when the complete tag is too long. So LaEdittm has lots of tags, attributes, values and special characters, but not many fancy editor-type features (although I plan to add a few).
LaEdittm HTML Editor version 1.05 is free for individual, private, noncommercial at home use by people under 18 years of age, but you have to register to use it by supplying your full (real) name, city and country where you live, and a valid email address. All others must pay a licensing fee of US$10 to continue using LaEdittm after thirty (30) days.
Schools, camps, and all other organizations of any and all types must license LaEdittm. A classroom license allows up to thirty (30) copies of LaEditTM to be used in any one room for $150 (that's a 50% discount). Contact us for volume discount and site license information.
